With the first episode set to launch on the 50th anniversary of the beginning of decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, Will Young and Chris Sweeney join forces to debut their new weekly podcast series aimed at examining a diverse array of LGBTQ+ issues and topics. Behold, your new favourite listen…
The brainchild of UK pop legend Will Young and widely acclaimed music video director Chris Sweeney, Homo Sapiens will form a weekly conversational debate featuring a varying line-up of special guests in conversation with the duo. The longstanding friends have previously worked together on Young’s Come On and Hopes and Fears music videos on which Sweeney took the directorial reigns, alongside video work for the likes of Lana Del Rey, Lily Allen and Foals.
Owen Jones is set to be the first guest of the series, discussing his own coming-out story, launching on the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act 1967 which ultimately began the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Nigerian gay rights activist Bisi Alimi, trans actress Rebecca Root, beloved musician John Grant and Queer As Folk creator Russel T Davies are all set to guest too, covering everything from homophobia in Africa to the representation of LGBTQ+ characters in television and media.
Taking inspiration from BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour,’ expect a diverse range of subjects and topics from being LGBTQ+ in the army, the importance and significance of Pride to living with HIV with each weekly listen promised to come accompanied with its own fair share of “random chatter” alongside social media interaction and question taking from Young’s own Twitter account.
In their own words:
“As ‘Woman’s Hour’ super-fans, we adored the 70th anniversary celebrations late last year – the presenters were looking back at how their programme started and how pioneering it was to show current affairs from a female perspective – this sparked a conversation between us about the LGBTQ+ community and how great it would be to have a similar voice. It was a real lightbulb moment and the idea of ‘Homo Sapiens’ was born! Through recording this podcast, we’ve had a lot of fun, drunk a lot of tea, and learned a huge amount from some of the bravest, most intelligent and fun people who have paved the way for all LGBTQ+ people.”
