To feed your Moonlight obsession, Raf Simmons -who also dressed the cast for Sunday’s red carpet-has cast the main male characters in Calvin Klein’s newest campaign. Mahershala Ali, Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes model the iconic CK underwear and undershirts, continuing the brand’s honouring of different visions of masculinity. While their fashion advertisements frequently rely on celebrity, this casting seems more culturally significant somehow. Simons described his creative decision as, “an acknowledgement of remarkable actors who are revealing something important of being a man today in what they do”.
He was joined in by Calvin Klein’s creative director Pieter Mulier, stating that, “since the beginning, Calvin Klein’s underwear imagery has always made big statements about masculinity; the performances of these actors in Moonlight affected us deeply and made big statements about masculinity in a different way. Somehow we wanted to bring the two together.”
Besides achieving cinematic greatness, Moonlight’s achievement heavily lies upon it starting a conversation about the fragility of constructed masculinity, and Calvin Klein appropriately celebrates just that.
