Last night, film fanatics gathered at the BFI Southbank for the unveiling of the 2018 BFI Flare programme. As we’ve been accustomed in the 32 previous editions, Flare will bring to London the best in global contemporary queer cinema.
From 21 March to the 1st of April, BFI Southbank will don the rainbow as it brings viewers its now-classic strands of Hearts (celebrations of love, romance and friendship), Minds (reflections on art, politics and community) and Bodies (stories of sex, identity and transformation), alongside an important examination of AIDS on film. We’re also promised talks on the representation of QTIPOC on screen, an event dedicated to the gay costume designers of Hollywood and a collective reflection on The Cinema of Aids, plus quizzes and club nights that will help mark the occasion.
As announced by the institute in a release last week, the Opening Night gala will be the charming My Days of Mercy (2017), a story of love and politics, helmed by Kate Mara and Ellen Page in career-best performances. The other headline spot is claimed by Steve McLean’s Postcards From London (2017), which will see our personal favourite, Harris Dickinson of Beach Rats fame, return to the screen in a neon-lit vision of Soho.
Artistic Director of BFI Festivals Tricia Tuttle commented: “In recent years, the Festival has been developing links between the established film industry and the UK’s very exciting new generation of emerging LGBT identified filmmakers. We’re seeing a true strength in depth of talent in the UK and it’s a real thrill to see this in action with our Closing Night film, Steve McLean’s stylish and witty Postcards from London, a love song to European queer art and culture.”
Other highlights include a Second Chance Sunday, one day for a re-celebration of 2017’s best queer films, including the unmissable 120 BPM (2017), as well as a continuation of the BFI’s collaboration with the British Council in a return of the worldwide initiative #fiveFilms4freedom.
